Herkimer Diamond Mines
Although its “diamonds” are actually quartz crystals, this mine offers great opportunity for fun and prospecting for kids of all ages. Visitors are given a hammer and goggles and invited to dig about the site for crystal “treasures,” which appear frequently in the mineral-rich area. Folks get to keep what they find, and the mine also offers a gift shop and a museum that delves into the earth’s geology and New York’s rock heritage. In the vicinity are also a campground and opportunity for fishing, tubing, and canoeing.
